During the Victorian-era, brides often tucked symbolic silver charms into their wedding garments — tiny tokens sewn into hems, hidden in gloves, or tied to ribbons. Bridesmaids gathered around the bride and pulled a ribbon to reveal a charm with a playful meaning: a ring for the next to wed, a key for unlocking new opportunities, and a thimble for a life of independence.

As the Victorian era progressed, wedding charms took a sweeter turn. Silver trinkets were tied to delicate ribbons and tucked beneath layers of the wedding cake - each charm a symbol of love, luck, or longing. Before the first slice, bridesmaids gathered to pull their ribbons together and reveal a charm that foretold each of their futures.
And the best part? The tradition lives on.
Today’s celebrations bring new life to this charming custom. Beneath layers of frosting, charms tied to satin ribbons carry symbolic wishes for family and friends.
The tradition found a special home in the American South in the early 1900s, where New Orleans bakeries began tucking charms beneath wedding cakes.

Placing Your Cake Pull Charms
With the ribbon peeking out, here are some ideas on where to place your charms:
- In the frosting on the top of a cupcake or slice of cake
- Between the cake layers
- Inserted in the middle of a bundt cake with the ribbons draped down
- For a tidy experience, you can place the charm between 2 cupcake liners or beneath a doily.

Important Safety Instructions:
- Charms are small and children must be supervised by an adult.
- Place your charms after baking and completely cooled.
- Notify your guests in advance that there is a surprise hidden in their desserts. They should not take their first bite until they have revealed their surprise.
- Provide a wet wipe to clean the charm before taking their keepsake home.
